KFLAG COUNTRY MUSIC UPDATE

Toby Keith is as big a fan of the men and women in the U.S. military as they are of him. The singer recently wrapped up his 8th USO tour to entertain the troops overseas, visiting four countries in 14 days.

Toby may not always agree with the reasons troops are sent to war, but will fervently defend America's military whenever possible, something he told us will never change. "I'm there in complete support of the troops, and I don't care where they send 'em in the world -- those are my guys. I'm not a political guy. I've never been one. I get roped into that because of my stance, but my stance is pro-troops wherever they are in the world. I'm gonna be there playing for my guys and girls, and I've got a real special relationship with their families. I talk the talk, but I walk the walk."

  • Since his first USO tour in 2002, Toby has traveled to more than 10 countries over the course of his seven previous USO tours.
  • The superstar will kick off his American Ride tour on June 19th in Holmdel, New Jersey. The trek features special guests Trace Adkins and James Otto.
  • Toby's latest single, "Every Dog Has Its Day," is climbing the country charts.
Rascal Flatts had the experience of their first USO tour back in 2005. They returned with a whole new respect and appreciation for the U.S. troops. Lead singer Gary LeVox tells us the trio are big supporters of our military. "It's a big deal with us. We're totally just huge fans of the military and appreciate the pride that they take in keeping us free and it's been awhile since September 11th but us as Americans, a lot of us just go back to what we were normally doin' and some people forget that it's still goin' on. It's not over yet."
  • Rascal Flatts will kick off their Nothing Like This tour on June 25th in Raleigh, North Carolina.
  • The 26-date trek will run through September 19th at Boston's Comcast Center.
  • The tour will feature special guests Kellie Pickler and Chris Young.
  • Rascal Flatts will perform on the main stage at LP Field in Nashville on June 12th as part of CMA Music Festival.

  • Joe Don Rooney and his wife, Tiffany Fallon, are expecting a daughter this fall. They are already parents to two-year-old son Jagger.
The title track of Dierks Bentley's 2006 CD, Long Trip Alone, barely cracked the Top 10, but it's a big hit with the men and women of the U.S. military and their families. Dierks tells us he didn't write the song with the troops in mind, but it has become the tune he dedicates to them night after night in concert. "It's a love song. It's a prayer. The more I sing it the more it reminds me of the military families, and people really connect to that song. When we're on the road we always address those families and those folks. Right now the hot topic is jobs and the economy, and so the war kind of gets pushed to the back burner, but country audiences, it seems like there's a higher percentage of people in the audience that actually have some connection to the war. Our fan base provides -- those families provide -- a lot of the man power, so we always address that, and that song's a special part of the show."
  • Dierks' upcoming tour dates include the Bamajam Music Festival in Enterprise, Alabama on Thursday (June 3rd) and the Hullabalou Music Festival in Louisville, Kentucky on July 23rd.
  • His new blugrass album, Up On The Ridge, will be released on June 8th.

FAST FACTS

  • The Long Trip Alone CD produced the chart-topping hits "Every Mile a Memory" in 2006 and "Free and Easy (Down the Road I Go)."
  • The album was certified gold for sales of half a million copies.
Miranda Lambert's third annual Cause for Paws Event raised $91,000 last weekend in Tyler, Texas for the Humane Society of East Texas. GAC personality Nan Kelley hosted the crowd of over 800 people who attended the dinner and concert featuring Miranda and special guests Nightwork, Kacey Musgraves, Whiskey Myers and a surprise appearance by Blake Shelton.

During the encore, Miranda agreed to donate $2800 to the Cause if Blake came on stage and performed his recent chart-topper, "Hillbilly Bone." The newly-engaged couple then continued to sing for tips, ultimately collecting over $1000.

One of the big-ticket auction items was a rare Gibson Goddess electric guitar autographed by members of ZZ Top and Miranda that brought in $8000.

  • Miranda said, "It is the best feeling in the world to know we are helping in the fight to treat and find homes for abandoned and abused animal. Since we started working with the Humane Society of East Texas over 3 years ago, we have donated over $325,000 and they have become a 'no kill' shelter. Every year it amazes me that people spend their hard-earned money to partner with us in this fight. I am very grateful!"
  • This year, in addition to the East Texas Humane Society, funds were given from Miranda's hometown to Nan's hometown of Nashville to help animals affected by the recent area flood. The Humane Assocation of Nashville was presented with a plaque and special donation of $3,600, collected by the Lindale Independent School District's "Nickels for Nashville" campaign.

FAST FACTS

  • Cause for the Paws was created by Miranda's mom, Bev, on behalf of her daughter.
  • Miranda and her fiance, Blake Shelton, have also created an event called Hearts And Tails. It benefits the shelter in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, where Miranda owns a farm.

Trace Adkins will be presented with the DAR Medal of Honor, the most prestigious honor awarded by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, during a private ceremony. The Sarah Polk Chapter DAR of Brentwood, Tennessee is presenting Trace with the honor in recognition of his outstanding service and leadership to his state and nation and for his patriotism and humanitarian works.

Sugarland's Enjoy The Ride album has been certified triple-platinum, while Zac Brown Band's The Foundation and Lady Antebellum's Need You Now have both earned double-platinum status. The song, "Need You Now" was certified triple platinum.

CHARGES REPORTEDLY COMING FOR 'SURVIVOR' PRODUCER: Prosecutors in the Bruce Beresford-Redman case reportedly want the former Survivor producer charged with first degree murder. Bruce's Mexican lawyer told TMZ.com that prosecutors plan to file the charge by the end of the day on Monday. According to Mexican law, the Attorney General will submit his recommendation to a judge, who will then review the evidence. If the judge determines there is probable cause, Beresford-Redman will be formally charged with the murder of his wife, Monica Burgos Beresford-Redman, and the judge will issue an arrest warrant. KIRSTEN DUNST SHOOTS DOWN DRUG CLAIMS: A rep for Kirsten Dunst responded to a claim by the man accused of stealing her purse who claimed there were drugs in her hotel room, calling the comments "false and clearly a desperate ploy." TVByTheNumbers.com noted that it could have been worse: the Dancing With the Stars finale on Tuesday night was down 27 percent from last spring's finale.

BRET MICHAELS KEPT APPEARANCE SECRET FROM DOCTORS: Bret Michaels' appearance at the American Idol finale wasn't only a surprise for viewers: his own doctors were shocked. The ailing rocker told Usmagazine.com before hitting the stage, "The doctors, I didn't tell them I was going to do this. I never told them I was coming here. They're going to find out in a few minutes! I may not have told (my family) either. Here's the thing, they have not said everything's OK. I'm running about 75 per cent realistically, physically, but in my soul and my heart, I feel great. I needed to do this tonight, just to come here."

RICKEY MINOR INSULTED BY LACK OF GOODBYE: Rickey Minor -- the American Idol bandleader leaving to join The Tonight Show with Jay Leno -- was reportedly livid that he wasn't acknowledged during the finale. TMZ.com reports that after the show ended, Minor "went off on" the show's producers for the silent insult. Minor supposedly refused to go backstage for the champagne afterparty until producers pleaded with him and then got Randy Jackson to try and smooth it over with an unprepared speech. Minor then said a few words but the TMZ source said, "You could cut the bitterness with a knife."

CRYSTAL BOWERSOX AND BEAU SPLIT BEFORE FINAL 'IDOL' PERFORMANCE

Crystal Bowersox has had a tough week. In addition to losing out on the American Idol crown, Bowersox revealed that she and her boyfriend broke up-- just hours before the final performances on Tuesday (May 25th).

Crystal broke the news to Ryan Seacrest on Thursday morning: (Crystal) "Big Tony, he went home, he wasn't cool with the lifestyle. (Ryan) Is that right? You broke up with him? (Crystal) Yeah, No, I didn't break up with him, it was a mutual thing."

She went on to explain the breakup, saying, "No it's cool though. We're both logical, grown adults. He's a small town guy and it's fine. But I'm a small town girl but I want this. I want this more than anything -- this career, this lifestyle. I didn't think he was up for it. He didn't think he was up for it."

JESSE JAMES ON 'NIGHTLINE' GETS HUGE RATINGS

Jesse James's Nightline interview scored the show its highest ratings since the program re-launched in 2005. PerezHilton.com reports that 6.8 million people tuned in to hear Jesse talk about his cheating and the end of his marriage to Sandra Bullock.

Meanwhile, Jesse's sister is backing up his allegations that he was physically abused by their father, Larry. After Jesse revealed in the interview that his father hit him and broke his arm, Larry and his ex-wife Janina came forward to deny the claims.

  • Sister Julie, however, said, "I saw it. I lived there with my dad, and he was very aggressive with Jesse and I. He did abuse Jesse."
  • Regarding her dad and Janina, Julie said, "I think they are giving their stories to make money. Janina was married to my dad when we were teenagers. She doesn't know how angry my dad used to get with us. I don't know why she would speak out. My [birth] mom had to be my mother and my father. She would back us up. She would do anything for her kids."

MEGAN FOX REPORTEDLY DROPPED OUT OF 'TRANSFORMER'S BECAUSE OF MICHAEL BAY

Megan Fox sources are corroborating her rep's story that it was the actress's choice to leave the Transformers franchise -- and placing the blame for her decision on Michael Bay. E! reports that the filmmaker has "the reputation around town of being very hard to work for, especially if you're a woman."

According to the Fox source, "[Megan] would constantly complain about having to go to work, she never wanted to do it. Bay would constantly scream at her. He would scream at everyone, but especially Megan. Imagine a really, really bitchy grandmother on the set, and that's what Michael Bay is like."

  • A friend said that Megan told him, "All [Bay] wants to do is shoot my a** and my t*ts, I hate him!'" He added that Megan would have "never" gone back, anyway. "Not the way she was treated."

JERSEY SHORE CAST REPORTEDLY APPEARING IN ENRIQUE IGLESIAS VIDEO

The Jersey Shore cast members will reportedly appear in a new music video with Enrique Iglesias. TMZ.com reports that The Situation, Snooki and the rest of the crew spent yesterday -- their last day in Miami -- on the set of Enrique's video for "I Like It."

The song, which features rapper Pitbull, appears on Enrique's new album as well as the Jersey Shore soundtrack.

SHOW ANGERING JERSEY SHORE RESIDENTS

In other news, Jersey Shore residents are "infuriated" at the impact the show is having on their town. A Seaside Heights resident told the New York Daily News, "There are going to be sections of the beaches blocked off, bars closed down and restaurants reserved for the cast. A lot of people have been coming to vacation here for years. They want to relax and get away, not be front row to a reality-TV disaster."

  • The insider added, "There's a fear that their newfound fame, mixed with the backlash from the locals, could cause some friction. That will create good drama for the show, but the last thing that MTV wants is trouble."

'LOST' DVD WILL FEATURE EPILOGUE WITH HURLEY AND BEN

Lost fans, rejoice! A brief but meaningful exchange during the finale will be expanded upon when the sixth and final season comes out on DVD.

One of the major revelations last Sunday was that Hurley, played by Jorge Garcia, ultimately became the island's protector, with Michael Emerson's Ben serving as his right hand man. During a TV appearance in Britain earlier this week, Emerson revealed that the DVD will feature a never-before-seen scene between Ben and Hurley about their time on the island.

  • Emerson revealed, "For those people that want to pony up and buy the complete 'Lost' series, there is a bonus feature -- you could call it an epilogue, a lost scene. It's a lot, 12 or 14 minutes, that opens a window on that gap of unknown time between Hurley becoming number one and the end of the series."

MICHAEL JACKSON'S PARENTS ILLEGALLY SELLING COMMEMORATIVE BELTS?

A lawyer representing Michael Jackson's estate claims that the late singer's parents, Katherine and Joe Jackson, have authorized the sale of MJ commemorative belts -- without the trustees permission.

TMZ.com reported that the belts feature several images trademarked by the King of Pop -- including dancing feet, his silhouette and the MJ crest -- and will be sold online for $1,500. One belt is autographed by Michael's kids and is scheduled to be auctioned off with a starting bid of $5,000.

  • The estate lawyer, Howard Weitzman says that none of the items have been approved and that the trustees must authorize any commercial use of the trademarks, as well as MJ's name or image. He told the site, "The Trustees of the Estate of Michael Jackson did not authorize the making or the sale of the Michael Jackson Tribute Belts." He continued, "We would never condone the use of Michael's children's signatures to promote the sale of merchandise."

BP CONTINUING 'TOP KILL' ATTEMPT; OIL LEAK SURPASSES EXXON VALDEZ: BP continued for a second day Thursday (May 27th) to try to stop the Gulf of Mexico oil well leak using the "top kill" technique. BP resumed pumping heavy drilling mud into the well after an 18-hour delay to assess the results so far and bring in more materials. Officials said it could be late Friday or the weekend before they know if the procedure has stopped the oil that has been gushing out since the April 20th explosion on an offshore drilling platform. Meanwhile, two teams of government scientists calculated the damaged well has been spewing between 504,000 and more than one million gallons a day, far more than the 210,000 gallons a day previously estimated by BP. Even using the lowest estimate, 18 million gallons have been leaked so far, surpassing the 11 million gallons spilled in the Valdez disaster in Alaska in 1989. In other news:

  • President Obama held a news conference at which he sought to assure Americans that the government is in control, trying to deflect criticism that the administration has left BP in charge. He said, "My job right now is just to make sure everybody in the Gulf understands: This is what I wake up to in the morning, and this is what I go to bed at night thinking about. The spill." Obama also announced major new restrictions on drilling projects.
  • Elizabeth Birnbaum, the director of the Minerals Management Service, the federal agency that regulates the oil industry, resigned under pressure. The agency has been strongly criticized over lax oversight and cozy ties with industry.
  • The Coast Guard approved portions of Louisiana's $350 million plan to ring its coastline with a wall of sand to keep out the oil.

HOUSE APPROVES REPEAL OF 'DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL': The House voted 234-194 Thursday (May 27th) to repeal the military's "don't ask, don't tell" ban on gays serving openly in the military, approving the change as an amendment to a defense spending bill. The vote came as part of a deal backed by President Obama under which the repeal would be voted on now, but wouldn't go into effect until after the Pentagon completes a study in December on the impact of a repeal and how it would be implemented. Additionally, the president, defense secretary and Joint Chiefs of Staff would have to certify that the repeal would not affect the military's ability to fight. Republicans voted overwhelmingly against repealing the ban, saying Congress should wait until the results of the study are completed. The legislation faces a tougher battle in the Senate, where Republicans have threatened to filibuster it.

TODAY'S FYI:

OBAMAS SPENDING WEEKEND IN CHICAGO: President Obama and his family -- including first dog Bo -- are spending the Memorial Day weekend in Chicago, arriving yesterday (May 27th) as they returned to their home in the city for the first time in more than a year. However, the president will break away from the mini-vacation Friday to go to Louisiana and assess the situation on the ground where oil has begun to come ashore from the oil well leak in the Gulf of Mexico. On Memorial Day itself, Obama will pay tribute to fallen American soldiers at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery outside Chicago, while Vice President Joe Biden will carry out the traditional visit to Arlington National Cemetery in his place. Obama has come under fire from some conservative critics for not going to Arlington, but he's not the first president who hasn't. According to the Washington Post: Ronald Reagan spoke at West Point one Memorial Day and went to his California ranch another; George H.W. Bush didn't go at all; and George W. Bush didn't attend in 2001 and 2002.

GOVERNMENT WARNS OF STRONG HURRICANE SEASON: One day after the head of Colorado State University's hurricane forecasting team said we'd have a very busy hurricane season, the U.S. government's top climate agency also warned of a strong season that may be the most intense since 2005, when Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast. In its first forecast for the storm season that begins next week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration yesterday (May 27th) forecast 14 to 23 named storms, with 8 to 14 developing into hurricanes. Three to seven of those could be major Category 3 or above hurricanes. An average Atlantic hurricane season usually has 11 tropical storms with six hurricanes, including two major hurricanes.

PALIN'S NEIGHBOR SOUGHT WRITER AS TENANT: Politico reported yesterday (May 27th) that the Wasilla neighbor of Sarah Palin who owns the home being rented by an author writing a book about the former Alaska governor sought him out in order to rent it to him. Politico cited author Joe McGinniss' son, Joe McGinniss Jr., who shared an e-mail he sent in response to a Palin supporter who'd e-mailed him by mistake, confusing his e-mail address with his father's. According to McGinniss Jr., the woman who owns the house knew his father was writing a book about Palin and sought him out to offer it as a rental. She was upset with the Palins because, according to her, they owed her money for renovations she had done at their request and never paid her for. The younger McGinniss also defended his father, saying, "As a writer, you go where the story is, get as close as you can to it. . . . He's not stalking or peeping or peering or meddling. He's simply fulfilling his obligations to his publisher and his readers and himself -- to get as close to the subject of his book as possible."

  • Meanwhile, true to her Facebook word, Palin has begun building a fence around her home to block McGinniss' view of her property. Writing on Facebook earlier this week about the move-in of McGinniss, who's previously written a critical magazine article about her, Palin cited the saying, "Good fences make for good neighbors," before writing she'd begin on a, quote, "tall fence tomorrow."

FORD TO DROP ITS MERCURY CAR BRAND: Ford is readying to phase out its 71-year-old Mercury car brand, with the Wall Street Journal reporting Thursday (May 27th) that CEO Alan Mulally and other top executives have gotten the support of members of the Ford family, and are expected to seek approval from the company's board to drop the brand after years of falling sales. Mercury was created in 1939 by Edsel Ford, son of founder Henry Ford. It's the latest of several brands eliminated by the company since Mulally became CEO in 2006, coming after the sales of Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo.

AMERICAN FREED FROM PRISON IN PERU AFTER 15 YEARS: American citizen Lori Berenson was freed from prison in Peru Thursday (May 27th) after serving 15 years of a 20-year sentence for collaborating with the Tupac Amaru Marxist guerrilla group during the country's civil war. Her family maintained she was a social activist who never took up arms and was wrongfully convicted. The 40-year-old Berenson was granted parole Tuesday, and under its terms must stay in Peru for the next five years. She was released with her one-year-old son, who'd been living with her in prison. Her husband is an attorney and former Tupac Amaru member who she married in 2003, however they are no longer romantically involved. Inmates in Peru are allowed conjugal visits.

LAKERS TOP SUNS ON SHOT AT THE BUZZER BY ARTEST: The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Phoenix Suns in Game 5 of the NBA Western Conference finals in L.A. last night (May 27th) on a shot at the buzzer by Ron Artest after he grabbed the rebound from a missed Kobe Bryant three-point shot. Artest's winning basket came after Jason Richardson had scored a three-pointer with just 3.5 seconds left to tie it for the Suns. The 103-101 win gave the Lakers a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. Bryant scored 30 points in the game for the Lakers, while Steve Nash led the Suns with 29. OFF BEAT BRIEFS

KITTEN SURVIVES WASHING MACHINE CYLE: A four-month-old kitten in Australia miraculously survived being tossed and spun in a full washing machine. Brendon Rogers from Sydney says that their fluffy little kitten, Kimba, most likely got into their front-loading washing machine to curl up on a pile of dirty clothes when it was accidentally shut in. Brendon and his father Lyndsay were shocked to find Kimba drenched in the washer once the cycle was over. He says, "We could hardly believe our eyes when she emerged, looking like a drowned rat." They had to take the kitten to the vet for treatment after the detergent badly damaged her eyes. Rogers said, "It is just amazing that she survived but we reckon she's used all of her nine lives." GERMAN BANK ROBBERS BLOW UP BANK AND GET NO CASH: Police are still searching for bank robbers in Germany who fled the crime scene after their attempt to use explosives to steal the bank's money was unsuccessful. Photos show a completely destroyed structure with the cash machine still standing unaffected. A local police spokesman said, "The explosion was so big, they had to run away without the money . . . Something evidently didn't work the way the robbers wanted it to." While cars and nearby buildings were damaged, no one was injured in the explosion. (Reuters)

60-YEAR-OLD CHINESE WOMAN GIVES BIRTH TO TWINS: On Tuesday (May 25th) a 60-year-old Chinese woman gave birth to twins -- making her the oldest woman in China to give birth. The woman became pregnant via in-vitro fertilization when friends and family urged her to become pregnant after her 28-year-old daughter passed away from "gas poisoning." The twins were born prematurely at just 35 weeks old. The woman says, "Their cry resembles my late daughter . . . The girls give me and my husband the courage to live on. Despite the fact that we are old, we have the confidence to bring them up." The twins are currently in stable condition. (AFP)

DID YOU KNOW?

MOMS CAN'T STAND THEIR FRIENDS: Mothers admit they can't stand more than half the 'friends' they meet after having a baby. A study found that thanks to antenatal groups and coffee mornings the average woman makes 11 new friends when she becomes a mother. But by the time her little bundle of joy starts school she will already have a grudge against more than half of them. The most common reasons for the simmering dislike are 'she is too competitive' and 'she's a bit of a know-it-all'. The website's survey of 3,000 mothers found a third were fed up with others who thought they knew everything about raising children, while a similar percentage were frustrated they didn't share any hobbies or interests with their 'mum friends'. One in three didn't even consider their 'mom friends' as 'real friends' -- and 16 percent said their long-term circle of friends wouldn't get on with them either. (Daily Mail)

HORROR MUSIC EXPLAINED: Researchers have cracked the mystery of why horror-flick music makes people scared. Freak-out film scores, from the screeching violins in the shower scene of "Psycho" to the two thundering notes played over and over as sharks attack in "Jaws," have one thing in common: They mimic the cries that wild animals in distress have used for millions of years. Scientists call these cries, screeches and screams "non-linear vocalization" and say they are louder, higher-pitched and more sudden than normal noises animals and humans make. Animals make the disturbing noises in emergencies to warn of danger or cry for help, and all land vertebrates may be hard-wired to respond. (NY Daily News)

MARRIED COUPLES DRINK MORE THAN SINGLES: Married couples are more likely to drink more often than singles, new research out of Britain shows. Additionally, Middle class professionals who relax with a bottle of wine in the evening are now more likely to drink to excess than those in working class jobs. Experts warn that a trend towards stronger drinks and larger wine glasses in recent years mean that many middle class people underestimate how much they are drinking. One in seven professionals drank on almost every day in the previous week, that is on five or more, compared to just one in 10 of those from manual households. They were also more likely to exceed the recommended daily limit and to binge drink. (Daily Mail)

BBQ TRIVIA (YumSugar.com)

  • In the US, North-Easterners are the biggest barbequers, followed by those who inhabit the North-Central, the South, and the West
  • Hamburgers are the most popular food to grill at 87%, followed by steak 83%, chicken 78%, and hot dogs 76%.
  • The 4th of July is the largest barbeque holiday, followed by Memorial Day and Labor Day.
  • American presidents have openly expressed their love for grilling by hosting barbeques dating all the way back to Thomas Jefferson.
  • The most commonly grilled side dish is corn, followed by other vegetables, and potatoes.
  • Hickory barbeque sauce is favored, then mesquite, honey, and tomato based.
In homemade barbeque sauces, garlic is almost always found in the recipe, as is brown sugar.
  • After aluminum foil, the preferred barbeque tools are long handed tongs, clean brushes, and spatulas.
  • To check the propane level of your barbeque's gas tank, weigh on your normal bathroom scale. An empty tank weighs between 17 and 19 pounds. The difference between that and what your tank weighs is how much gas you have left.
  • The origin of the word barbeque is debatable. Some believe it's from the Spanish word barbacoa which was a framework of green wood that held cooking food over hot coals. Others think the word is French because of the term they gave to the cooking technique of pirates who cooked meats from whiskers to tail or de barbe a queue.
  • Both Memphis and Kansas City claim that they are the barbeque capital of the United States.

MALE BEHAVIOR EXPLAINED (YourTango.com)

1.He texts ALL the time, but never calls.

MYSTERY SOLVED: Sure his texts brighten your day and you'd miss them if they disappeared but it would be nice to get a call every once in awhile, too. Doesn't seem like much to ask for, does it?! Well, there are two reasons your man is a phone-a-phobe. Most likely -- he just hates the phone. The other explanation for his text obsessive behavior is that there is someone in his life that he doesn't want listening in on your convo. Could be a boss, a roomie, a nosy mom, or worse case, a current girlfriend. In either circumstance, texting gets the job done (engages you enough and allows for logistical planning) and if you aren't putting your foot down about it, he has no incentive to change his behavior.

2. He acts differently (i.e. distant) around his friends than when it is just the two of you.

MYSTERY SOLVED: When it is the two of you, your man is a living, breathing Valentine card -- pure mush, but as soon as you two walk into guy's turf he barely acts like he knows you -- at best you get a high five. Guys innately want to be one of the pack and oftentimes girlfriends ruin that. Sure in theory the guy with the girlfriend is the luckiest because he's the one who isn't cold and lonely at night, but having a smoochy girlfriend hanging on him at the sports bar significantly decreases his macho cred.

3. You've been having sex for awhile, but he never stays through the night.

MYSTERY SOLVED: Not much beats waking up to a warm, cuddly guy but yours keeps bolting like a thief in the night. Unless your bed is supremely uncomfortable, you snore like a freight train or he has some other reasonable excuse for vanishing, chances are if he isn't staying to see the sun come up with you, he might have intimacy and/or commitment issues, or you have been relegated to booty call status.

4. He said, "I love you, but I'm not IN love with you."

MYSTERY SOLVED: Hearing these words sting and confuse the heart like no other sentiment. Sugarcoating aside, any way you cut it, this statement translates to "You are completely amazing, but you are not the girl for me." It could be coming from a guy who used to be in love with you but isn't any longer or it could be from a guy who has put you permanently in the friend zone, regardless of if you have been intimate of not.

5. The less interest you show in him, the more he wants to be with you.

MYSTERY SOLVED: It feels like you are reliving third grade all over again. You pay attention to him -- he ignores you; you don't and he can't get enough! This is a classic case of immature game playing coming from a guy who enjoys the chase of dating more than the idea of an actual relationship which offers little opportunity to win or to lose. Baked into this type of guy's being is the thrill of the pursuit -- it gives him a high of power and if you play into it, well you are playing his game.

6. He flirts with other women. . . IN FRONT OF YOU!

MYSTERY SOLVED: His ace flirting skills may be just the thing that scored your interest but seeing him perform in front of you on other women has you steaming mad, and rightfully so! This man mystery can occur for a few reasons depending on the guy and his intent. First, he could just be a disrespectful pig, who is well, just not that into you and is scouting alternatives right there in front of you. If that's not the case, he may possibly be trying to make you jealous.

7. He won't stop for directions.

MYSTERY SOLVED: You've been lost for an hour but your man swears he knows where he is going. Despite your bubbling aggravation, he refuses to stop for directions. This one universally applies to men because universally, men don't like to be one-upped by other men, especially around their lady. If he pulls over to ask someone else for directions, you might see the other guy as smarter. Caveman like indeed, but you can't really blame him for wanting to impress you -- his heart is in the right place, even if his ego isn't.

8. He doesn't know what to do/say when you are upset.

MYSTERY SOLVED: There they are -- your guts all over the floor. As you reach for a tissue to wipe away your runny mascara and some words of comfort or advice from your man, you receive a blank stare in return. Did he hear a word of what you just said? It isn't that he wasn't listening, doesn't have anything to say or doesn't care, he is likely afraid of saying the wrong thing and you, as a result, getting upset with him. Most guys aren't as confident in expressing feelings or offering advice as women are but rather solve problems logically. The last thing he wants to do when you are vulnerable is disappoint you by offering the wrong words.

IMPOSSIBLE QUESTION

When was Memorial Day first celebrated?

A: Memorial day was first celebrated on May 30, 1868. It was observed by placing flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers during the first national celebration. Gen. James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which around 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried there.

WATER COOLER TALK

Americans Planning Cheaper Vacations Again This Summer

As the summer season officially kicks off this Memorial Day weekend, auto club Triple-A is saying that Americans are planning cheaper vacations again this summer, amid the recovering-but-still-fragile economy and stubborn high unemployment. Triple-A estimates that U.S. families will spend an average of $809 on summer travel this year, compared to $876 in 2009, with travel agents saying people are reducing costs by staying closer to home, choosing less-expensive modes of transportation, and picking destinations based on the best travel fares and hotel prices they can find.

Some Schools Banning Silly Bandz

A new kid craze across the country is Silly Bandz, colorful, stretchy, rubber band-like bracelets that come in all different shapes, like animals, sports, musical instruments, etc., and that sell for about $5 for a pack of 24. But Time magazine reports that as the craze has grown, some schools in several states have banned kids from wearing Silly Bandz in school. School administrators say the bracelets are distracting as students play with them or arrange trades in class when they should be concentrating on their schoolwork. The small Ohio company behind Silly Bandz, BCP Imports, was caught by surprise by the frenzy over the bracelets. Time reports that they sell millions of packs of Silly Bandz a month, and have upped their workforce from 20 employees to 200 in the past year and just added 22 phone lines to keep up with inquires.

Poll Finds Many Drivers Don't Know the Rules of the Road

A new online survey out from GMAC Insurance found that some 20 percent of U.S. drivers don't have basic knowledge about the rules of the road and would fail a written test if they had to take it again. The poll, which included 20 questions from state driving exams as well as questions about distracting habits such as texting, showed many drivers were confused about standard driving practices. Drivers in Kansas scored the highest, followed by Oregon, South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. New York drivers came in last, with New Jersey, Washington, D.C., California and Rhode Island also in the bottom five. Men over 45 years old had the highest average marks, and overall scored higher than women.

KFLAG COUNTRY MUSIC UPDATE

Carrie Underwood was among the American Idol alumni who performed during last night's (Wednesday, May 26th) season finale. Lee DeWyze was crowned the winner, beating out runner up Crystal Bowersox. As the 2005 winner, Carrie knows what Lee is experiencing today as the reality of the win sinks in. Owning the title, however, is no guarantee for success, Carrie tells us: "Whenever I was on Idol I was just hoping to stay there for another week. That was as far as my calendar would go, and I don't think anybody could have possibly predicted any of this. I mean, just because you're on Idol or you win Idol doesn't mean you're an instant superstar. There's a lot that goes into it and a lot of it has to do with luck and fans and God. There's a lot of different factors."

In other Carrie news, the singer's wedding to NHL player Mike Fisher is "right around the corner," a soure told E! news. The couple have never announced an official date, but Carrie has said the nuptials will take place sometime this summer in Nashville. The source added, "It's soon though, real soon."

  • Carrie's Play On tour stops in Everett, Washington on Saturday (May 29th).
  • The singer will perform at the Nashville Rising flood relief benefit concert on June 22nd at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. The nearly sold out show also features appearances by headliners Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, as well as Taylor Swift, Brooks & Dunn, Toby Keith, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan, among others.
Lady Antebellum recently helped raise $1.8 million by performing on GAC's telethon to aid flood recovery in Middle Tennessee and they're still not done trying to raise money for the cause. The trio will donate all proceeds from their sold out fan club event on June 10th during Nashville's CMA Music Festival to flood relief, as well as any donations they receive from a live stream of their intimate concert at the party. Fans will be able check out the performance online at ladyantebellum.com and livestream.com for a minimum $5 donation.
  • Dave Haywood said, "It was great to be a part of the benefit at the Ryman. To see how everyone is coming together for Nashville and the surrounding areas is really inspiring. We want to keep doing our part because it isn't over yet. Music City has a long way to go. Streaming the event online is a cool way for us to include more of our fans in this event, and all the money goes to a great cause."
  • More details will be available on Lady A's website in the coming days.
  • In the meantime, the trio continues on Tim McGraw's Southern Voice tour tomorrow (Friday, May 28th) night in Wheatland, California. This weekend's schedule includes stops in Mountain View, California on Saturday (May 29th) and Stateline, Nevada on Sunday (May 30th).
Reba McEntire's latest hit, "I Keep On Loving You," is a song that she relates to personally in her longtime marriage to her manager, Narvel Blackstock, but it's also a special song that reminds Reba of her faithful fans. The superstar tells us she is hoping fans really get the message, which is the title of her current CD. "It's a very strong message. That's why I wanted to name it Keep On Loving You, because they have been with me through thick and thin, music, Broadway, television. Wherever I go they follow me. They take the journey with me, and that's so important, and I wanted to tell them that I'll always love them. I'll keep on lovin' 'em."
  • Reba will show her love to the fans by performing at CMA Music Festival on June 11th at Nashville's LP Field.
  • Her new Unplugged video for "I Keep On Loving You" is currently playing on CMT and cmt.com.
  • Her last performance of the year with George Strait is scheduled for September 11th at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena.

Mindy McCready was released from a Cape Coral, Florida hospital on Tuesday (May 25th) evening after suffering what some reports have called an overdose of the painkiller Darvocet. Mindy is in Florida to fight her mother, Gayle Ingle, for custody of her four-year-old son, Zander. According to initial reports, Mindy broke her toe recently and Gayle gave the singer her own prescription Darvocet for the pain. After taking the medication, Mindy began feeling sick. Gayle called 911 to report an overdose.

Gayle reportedly told RadarOnline that Mindy was trying to kill herself. She said, "Mindy told the 911 people that she absolutely didn't care if she lost her life."

Mindy's publicist issued a statement yesterday (Wednesday, May 26th) saying, "As of this morning, our offices do not have official verification of the medical diagnosis surrounding Mindy McCready's hospitalization. Her attorney has asked to review the medical records. We have not been given information to confirm the reports of an overdose or attempted suicide. It should be noted that the relationship between Mindy and her mother, Gayle, is volatile and unhealthy. They are currently in the midst of a custody battle for the guardianship of Mindy's son.

Mindy's brother, Josh McCready, sent an email to various media outlets stating, "She is fine and back at home with my mother. It was by far over a huge exaggeration."

Mindy's former Celebrity Rehab roommate and friend, Mackenzie Phillips, has come to Mindy's defense. She told InTouch magazine, "I find it suspicious that her mom gave her a strong medication for a broken toe and called 911 saying that she was overdosing. It also just seems a bit strange that this happened in the midst of a custody battle. Mindy was in Fort Myers to see her son, who is so important to her and whom she loves so much. I support her 100 percent. . . and I know that she is going to be fine and prevail."

  • Mindy's so-called overdose comes just days after winning a court judgement to reopen custody proceedings.
  • Mindy told us she was forced to turn over temporary custody of Zander to Gayle when the child was just 15 months old because she had to serve a jail sentence for violating her probabation. Gayle has never allowed Mindy to resume custody of her son.

Tim McGraw is racing up the charts with his latest hit, "Still." It's the third release from his 2009 CD, Southern Voice. Tim tells us it was one of his top choices for a single because it is so him. "'Still' probably sounds more like a . . . is, I think, a big hit record and it sounds like a classic sort of Tim McGraw record."
  • Tim continues on his Southern Voice tour with special guests Lady Antebellum and Love and Theft. They play in Wheatland, California on Friday (May 28th).
  • Tim and his wife, Faith Hill, will headline the Nashville Rising flood relief benefit concert on June 22nd at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. Other performers set to take the stage at the nearly sold-out concert include Toby Keith, LeAnn Rimes, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Jason Aldean and Brooks & Dunn.

FAST FACTS

  • Tim's Southern Voice album has so far produced one Number One hit with the CD's title track earlier this year.
  • The song, "Southern Voice," was Tim's career 23rd Number One hit.

LEE DeWYZE BEATS OUT CRYSTAL BOWERSOX TO WIN 'AMERICAN IDOL'

Lee DeWyze beat out Crystal Bowersox to become the latest American Idol winner last night (May 26th). DeWyze, a former paint salesman from Chicago, was shocked after learning he was the winner of the competition during Wednesday night's finale. "I have never been happier in my life," said DeWyze after the results were announced.

DeWyze seemed like the underdog after a couple of nervous vocals and during Tuesday night's show, while Bowersox impressed the judges with one of her best performances of the season. But in the end, the viewers chose DeWyze, who seemed to improve week to week.

  • The two hour finale was kicked off with the Top 12 performing "School's Out" with rock legend Alice Cooper. Other performers included Chicago, Joe Cocker, Christina Aguilera, Alanis Morrisette, Janet Jackson and Bret Michaels.
  • The finale also marked Simon Cowell's last night as a judge on the show. He had a parody of his insults sung to him by comedian Dane Cook and a surprise visit by former judge Paula Abdul, who said "American Idol is not going to be the same without you. But as only I can tell you, it will go on."
  • After the results, DeWyze closed out the show with his new single, "Beautiful Day.

CELEBRITY GOSSIP

ART LINKLETTER DIES AT 97: Iconic TV host Art Linkletter died on Wednesday (May 26th) at the age of 97. Art Linkletter's House Party, one of television's longest-running variety shows, debuted on radio in 1944 and was seen on CBS-TV from 1952 to 1969. Linkletter was also widely known for his TV show People Are Funny, an audience participation quiz show that began on NBC in 1954. Linkletter's life wasn't always laughable; The Associated Press noted that in 1969, his 20-year-old daughter, Diane, jumped to her death from her sixth-floor Hollywood apartment. He blamed her death on LSD use, but toxicology tests found no LSD in her body after she died. A son, Robert, died in a car accident in 1980, while another son, Jack Linkletter, was 70 when he died of lymphoma in 2007.

HEATHER LOCKLEAR CLEARED IN HIT-AND-RUN CASE: Heather Locklear won't be charged with a hit-and-run stemming from an incident in which a no-parking sign was knocked down. On April 17, the actress was arrested -- but not taken into custody -- and cited with misdemeanor hit-and-run after Ventura County Sheriffs examined debris on a public street near her gated-community home and traced it back to her black 2005 BMW. The D.A. announced on Wednesday that insufficient evidence existed to charge Locklear.

FORMER FOOD NETWORK CHEF TO COP PLEA DEAL? Former Food Network chef Juan-Carlos Cruz might strike a plea deal and serve minimal jail time for allegedly attempting to kill his wife. Cruz was recently arrested for allegedly trying to hire three homeless men to knock off Jennifer Campbell, who was reportedly suicidal after discovering she and her husband were unable to have children. TMZ.com reports that the D.A. is considering dismissing the attempted murder charge if he pled guilty or no contest to solicitation to commit murder, which carries a 3 to 9-year sentence. If Cruz got the low end of the sentence, with good behavior he would have to serve around a year and a half.

SOPHIA BUSH CONFIRMS AUSTIN NICHOLS RELATIONSHIP: Sophia Bush revealed that she and her One Tree Hill co-star Austin Nichols have been dating for the last four years. Starpulse.com reports that the two began seeing each other in 2006, before Nichols even joined the CW drama. Sophia said, "We've been dating off and on for the past four years. I was pretty terrified. We had so many years of history prior to him coming to work on the show, and I think someone taking a job and moving their life across the country to show you how much they care is pretty much the most romantic gesture that a person could make."

BRADY-BUNDCHEN BODYGUARD LAWSUIT DISMISSED: A New York judge dismissed a lawsuit by two photographers who said they were shot at by bodyguards for Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen at the couple's wedding last year. Yuri Cortez and Rolando Aviles as well as the news agency Agence France Presse claimed that the guards shot at the photographers and narrowly missed their heads.
