MIRANDA LAMBERT IS ALWAYS PACKIN' FOR PROTECTION
It should come as no surprise that Miranda Lambert
is a pistol-packin' mama. With hits like "Gunpowder and Lead" and a pistol tatooed on her arm, Miranda is no stranger to weapons, but she says it's for good reason.
Miranda tells Self
magazine that it's necessary for protection. She said, "I carry a weapon. I got a death threat a few years ago and was really scared. But I don't want bodyguards. I am my own security."
- Miranda is on the cover of the current issue of Self.
- She takes the stage at LP Field during CMA Music Festival in Nashville on June 7th.
- Miranda will also perform with her Pistol Annies bandmates on the CMT Music Awards on June 6th. She is nominated in four categories at the fan-voted award show, which airs live from Nashville on CMT and cmt.com at 8 p.m. ET.
is getting ready to head out on his first stadium tour as an opening act. While he has played these kind of venues on select dates, the Kenny Chesney
-headlined Brothers of the Sun
tour will be his first full blown such tour.
One of the first concerts Jake ever attended was when he was in high school and Kenny was opening for Tim. Jake tells us he hopes fans feel the way about him as he did about Kenny and Tim all those years ago. "You know, I've heard Kenny talk about before where he goes up to the highest point in the stadiums and looks down and wonders how he can connect with that person who's sitting there. I'll think about that as well from the stage. I want, whether it's the person in the pit down there or the person way up high in the stadium . . . They already know a lot about Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw. They know what they're getting when they're coming for that, but I still have that little bit of wonder in people like, 'Who is this guy?', and I want to make them leave the same way I left when I left that Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw at Coral Sky Amphitheater going, 'God, those guys are amazing!' And I want those kids that are now loving 'Barefoot Blue Jean Night' to grow up with me, too, you know, and
(laughs) cause I still have some growing up to do myself."
- The Brothers of the Sun tour kicks off on Saturday (June 2nd) in Tampa, Florida.
- Jake is climbing the charts with his latest single, "The One That Got Away."
- Jake's last two singles -- "Barefoot Blue Jean Night" and "Alone With You" -- topped the country singles charts.
- They are the first chart-toppers of his career.
is known to bust a move in her videos, but when it comes to her live shows, she finds that dancing interferes with her performance. She tells us: "My problem with the dancing on the stage is I sing. That's the problem, and sometimes if I get too excited on stage and I'm like bopping around I can't sing, and that's my first and foremost . . . I'm so mad at myself if I like give it my all and I'm like walking
(and) rocking the runway on award shows and stuff like that and I'm doing things and afterward I don't feel like I turned in the best vocal performance that I could cause I'm bopping around, and obviously everything I do is a thousand percent live, so that doesn't help either. I do what I can with the limits that I have. It's easier to move around and stuff on a video when you're not actually having to belt it out."
- Carrie will head out on her Blown Away tour in the UK on June 21st. She kicks things off with a sold out show at Royal Albert Hall in London.
- Stateside, Carrie will perform on the main stage at LP Field during CMA Music Festival in downtown Nashville on June 8th.

Bluegrass guitar legend Doc Watson died on Tuesday (May 29th) at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina at the age of 89. According to the AP, he was hospitalized after falling in his home, and remained in critical condition following abdominal surgery.
Blind since the age of one, Watson created a unique flat-picking style of playing guitar that helped changed the instrument's role in both bluegrass and country music.
In 1997, Watson received the National Medal of the Arts from President Clinton.
He also won eight Grammys throughout his career.

's new album, Thirty Miles West
, will arrive at retail in just a few days. This is Alan's 14th studio album, and his first for his own Alan's Country Records (ACR) in conjunction with EMI Nashville.
As with most of Alan's projects, he said the songs were inspired by things going on in his own life and around him. He tells us:
["I think back to all the albums I made, I'd say they're all similar in that they're songs about what I've always thought what country music's all about. You know, whether it's songs about your family and where you grew up or somebody dying or heartache from a lost love or a drinking song or a fun, partying song. It's just a mixture of songs about your children and what you go through. As a writer, you always pull from that stuff, and then when you put the album together, you always look for songs that fill all those same subjects. But most songs are written about love or lost love, and most of the time, lost love and heartache, so you usually end up with a little heavier hand with that type of song, but I think that's probably how this album ended up."
- Alan will launch his new album in New York City on June 5th, the day of release, with performances on NBC's the Today show and CBS's Late Show With David Letterman.
- He will also be featured on GAC's Noteworthy at the Opry on Saturday (June 2nd) at 9 p.m. ET. The show will also include a special rendition of one his most memorable hits by fellow Opry memberCarrie Underwood.
- Thirty Miles West features Alan's latest hit, "So You Don't Have to Love Me Anymore," which is currently making its way up the country charts.
- Alan will perform at CMA Music Festival in Nashville on June 10th. He will play the main stage at LP Field.
- Alan will play BamaJam with the Zac Brown Band in Enterprise, Alabama on June 15th.

Everyone wants him, and he can literally pick who he wants to sit down with, if he decides to ever tell his side of the story at all." Although it's unclear whether or not John will sit down with anyone, one publicist noted, "Eventually, even if all the legal problems go away, John will have to say something or else this will follow him for the rest of his life."

While interviewing the actor, Gifford said, "(Kathie) And he and Nancy have got one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business. How many years now for you guys? (Martin) We, uh, married 36 years. (Kathie) But you're like in love? (Martin) Madly in love. Madly in love."

ASHTON KUTCHER AND DEMI MOORE ARE NOT GETTING BACK TOGETHER

A source told People magazine, "They were friendly. Ashton got up at one point and grabbed coffee in a paper cup for Demi, and they smiled a few times during the program at each other. They seemed to get along and feel comfortable."
- As for the future? The insider said, "The family is in a pretty good place right now, but Ashton and Demi won't go back to being what they were. Ashton will always be a part of their lives, especially with regard to the girls and how close he is with them. It's about figuring out how to move forward into a new place."
KIM KARDASHIAN CLAIMS AIRLINE STOLE SENTIMENTAL SUNGLASSES
A pair of sunglasses were among the "sentimental" items Kim Kardashian claims British Airways stole from her luggage last weekend. After arriving at LAX, Kim blasted the airline on Twitter for "opening my luggage & taking some special items of mine!"
TMZ.com reported that one of the items missing was a pair of vintage sunglasses her father, Robert Kardashian, gave her just before he died. She is also blaming airline employees for taking several "extremely expensive" purses and Tumi luggage.

MATTHEW FOX DENIES COSTAR'S 'BEATING' ACCUSATIONS
A new celebrity feud has apparently surfaced from a seemingly innocent Twitter Q&A. Lost star Dominic Monaghan was responding to fan questions online when an inquiry about his former costar Matthew Fox led to an uncomfortable subject.
After a fan asked Monaghan to tell Fox he should get a Twitter account, Monaghan replied, "he beats women. No thanks." The fan responded, "but what about all those good times you had!?!" -- prompting another angry response which read, "how do you know we ever did?you don't know either of us.he beats women.not isolated incidents.often.not interested."
Fox was accused of drunkenly punching a female bus driver in her crotch last year. However he denied the allegations and criminal charges were never filed.
- A Fox insider addressed Dominic's comments to TMZ.com, saying that the actor has never beaten a woman in his life. The source noted that the two men haven't talked in years -- but never had a falling out, so it's unclear why Monaghan has such strong opinions about Fox's alleged dark side.

Cameron, a longtime friend of Barrymore's, told the magazine, "I knew Drew was getting married before she did!" She noted that Kopelman had her full blessing.
- As for Cameron's own love life? The serial Hollywood dater explained, "I would rather have my heart broken a thousand times than never love at all. I have so much love to give -- I'm not empty of love, I'm full of love."
CHRISTIAN BALE ONCE DATED DREW

- Dina once had a short-lived E! series called Living Lohan, which featured the momager and her less-famous children.

REPORT: VENEZUELAN PREZ. CHAVEZ AT 'END STAGE' OF CANCER: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's cancer has entered the "end stage," according to a report by Dan Rather, the former CBS newsman who's now the anchor and managing editor of HDNet. Rather cited what was described as a "highly respected source close to Chavez and who is in a position to know his medical condition and history" as saying that Chavez has an aggressive cancer called metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma and that he's expected to live no more than a couple of months at the most. Chavez is running for re-election, but Rather said several sources had said they doubt he'll live to see the results of the October 7th vote. Chavez has been treated three times in Cuba for cancer, but the type he is afflicted with has been kept secret.
NYC MAYOR WANTS BAN ON SALES OF LARGE-SIZE SUGARY DRINKS: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to propose a ban on sales of large-size sugary beverages by restaurants, food carts, movie theaters and delis, his administration said Wednesday (May 30th). The proposal is said to be aimed at fighting obesity, citing health statistics showing that 58 percent of New York City adults and nearly 40 percent of city public school students are obese or overweight. The ban would affect drinks sold in containers larger than 16 ounces, but not the sale of diet soda or dairy-based drinks. Bloomberg has previously launched a campaign to cut down on salt and a ban on trans fats in restaurant food, as well as a requirement that chain restaurants display calorie counts. His administration also banned smoking in bars and restaurants in 2003.

The capsule, which brought supplies to the space station, was scheduled to be detached from it at 4:05 a.m. ET and released from the station's crane about 90 minutes later, with splashdown expected at 11:44 a.m. Recovery ships will pick up the capsule and bring it to Los Angeles, and from there it will be taken to a SpaceX processing facility in Texas where it will be unloaded and inspected.
- The successful trial run is expected to clear SpaceX to begin working off its 12-flight, $1.6 billion NASA contract to fly cargo to the space station.
BRITISH COURT RULES WIKILEAKS FOUNDER ASSANGE CAN BE EXTRADITED: Britain's Supreme Court ruled Wednesday (May 30th) that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange can be extradited to Sweden for questioning on sex crime charges, rejecting his argument that the Swedish prosecutor who issued the arrest warrant wasn't a rightful judicial authority entitled to do so. However, the court issued a delay in the deportation, granting Assange's lawyer's request for two weeks to consider whether to apply to reopen the case on the grounds that the judgment referred to material that was not mentioned during the last hearing in February. Assange, a 40-year-old Australian, has been accused by two Swedish woman of sexual assault. He admits to having sex with them, but insists it was consensual and charges there are political motives behind the attempts to extradite him.
MARIJUANA CREATED THAT DOESN'T GET USERS HIGH: Israeli scientists have created a marijuana plant that doesn't get people high, a development that may help those who use the drug for medical reasons. The Israeli newspaper Maariv says the altered cannabis looks, smells and tastes the same, but the mind-altering effects of THC had been neutralized, while the effect of cannabidiol (CBD), which has been shown to help diabetics and ease psychiatric disorders, has been increased. Also gone along with the high is the munchies, the desire to eat many users feel when under the influence.
FDA REJECTS 'CORN SUGAR' NAME FOR HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP: The Food and Drug Administration yesterday (May 30th) rejected the Corn Refiners Association request to rename high fructose corn syrup as "corn sugar." High fructose corn syrup has gotten a lot of bad press in recent years, so the association applied in 2010 to rename it on nutrition labels. But the FDA said it defines sugar as a solid, dried and crystallized food, not a syrup. As part of the PR battle, the Corn Refiners Association has also been running a marketing campaign to explain that its syrup is a form of sugar and has the same nutritional value as table sugar. That led to a lawsuit last year from the Sugar Association claiming that the campaign is misleading.

, was ousted in the first round at the French Open, Venus Williams

of Poland. The losses marked the first time in 43 major tournaments with both Williams sisters in the field that neither got to the third round. UNHAPPY COUPLES HEAD TO 'DIVORCE HOTEL': A new business in Amsterdam, Netherlands offers couples a way to end their marriages in luxury. The "Divorce Hotel" encourages unhappy men and women to go any of their six properties to arrange the end of their marriages. Founder Jim Halfens said, "They arrive on Friday and we give them everything they need to leave Sunday with their divorce papers. Divorces can cost a lot of money and a lot of time. Here, it's done in three days." He added, "We have everything they need: lawyers, mediators, psychologists. The marriage failed, and that's negative. But it's also a new start, and that's positive. The only thing we can do is offer a better solution than fighting for years." Halfens also said he would like to bring the business to the U.S. and possibly create a reality show around the concept. MAN RAMS TRUCK INTO TACO BELL OVER WRONG ORDER: A man in Ohio who was upset that his Taco Bell order was missing one taco drove his truck into the entrance after restaurant employees corrected the order. Police said the man went through the drive-through Taco Bell in Huber Heights but soon returned to the window to berate an employee over a missing 99-cent taco. The man was given a new taco but before he left the restaurant's property, he rammed his truck into the entrance. Huber Heights police followed a trail of fluids leaking from his truck to the man's house where he was arrested on felony vandalism charges. Sergeant Chris Kash said, "The damage he's done to a business is vandalism, also, loss of business here and everything it's going to take to replace. This is a brand new store. They just built this and opened it maybe six months ago." (UPI)
TEXAS WAITER GETS $5,000 TIP: A 43-year-old server at D'Amico's in Houston, Texas said a pair of his regular customers gave him $5,000 to help him get a new car after his Nissan was destroyed in a thunderstorm. Greg Rubar said he'd been having trouble getting to and from the Italian restaurant ever since his car was ruined and was even 30 minute late the day the couple gave him the generous gift. He explained, "They were waiting until I showed up to give it to me." He said the man walked up to him and handed him an envelope, saying, "Go buy yourself a car." Rubar thanked him but didn't look inside the envelope and only later realized it contained $5,000 in cash. Rubar -- who has worked at D'Amico's for the past 16 years -- said, "I wasn't expecting this kind of money. I was shocked... I always talk to them. I've known them for eight years and I guess they just felt like helping me out." Rubar added, "When he gave me the envelope he told me he wasn't going to tip me for a while." He wants to thank the couple again but said they haven't been back to the restaurant since they gave him the money. (Daily Mail)
NEW YORK CITY TENANT SUED OVER FISH FARM: A man in New York City is being sued by his landlord for running a fish farm in his apartment. Errol Brett, a lawyer representing the owners of the high-rise apartment building, said 47-year-old Christopher Toole is violating his lease by running a non-profit operation from his apartment. Brett alleges that Toole, who runs the non-profit Society of Aquaponic Values and Education, breeds fish illegally to encourage other city-dwellers to grow fish in their own apartments. Neighbors have reportedly complained about water leaks, fishy smells and unreasonable levels of noise in the middle of the night. The lawyer claims that, because Toole sells the fish online, he is running a business out of the apartment. Toole told reporters that he didn't know about the lawsuit, but that "any publicity is good publicity." (Reuters)

49% OF BRIDES IMMEDIATELY CHANGE FACEBOOK STATUS: A new study has found that nearly half of newly-married women are so impatient, they are changing their status to married before the wedding reception has even begun. The research, commissioned by David's Bridal, revealed that 49 percent of brides-to-be and newlyweds would, or did, update their Facebook relationship status immediately after the ceremony. Melissa Barrad, a wedding planner in San Diego, told Today that she has even seen the status update incorporated into the ceremony itself, explaining, "It's the 21st-century wedding announcement. Instead of sending out wedding announcements, people change their Facebook statuses." Ms. Barrad, who is Facebook friends with most of her clients, said about one-third change their marital status on the wedding night, and another third have done it by the next morning. (Daily Mail)
ONCE FAT, ALWAYS FAT: No matter how much weight you've lost, a study found that if you've been fat -- your friends always think of you as fat. Scientists have found when a woman slims down, her family and colleagues remember her as being overweight --and continue to label her as being lazy and greedy. The study, by Manchester University, the University of Hawaii in Manoa and Monash University in Melbourne, looked at 273 volunteers. All were shown pictures of five 31-year-old women and told to read notes about them. The study found most people regarded women who had lost weight as being less attractive than the one who had always been slim. (Telegraph)
COUGARS ARE GETTING AN EARLY START: An increasing number of teenage girls are attending their school proms with boys who are younger than them. These "cougars in training" often go after the younger boys because they are more respectful -- and because many of the boys they've grown up with are too familiar. Rachel Koehn, an 18-year-old high school student from Baltimore, Maryland, told The New York Times: "The senior guys at my school tend to like to go out with the younger girls, so now I guess we are doing the same with younger guys.' She added that her boyfriend's parents approve of the relationship, saying, "They love me because he doesn't have his license yet and I drive him everywhere." (NY Times)
GETTING OFF THE COUCH IS A SIMPLE DIET: Simply removing yourself from the couch will make you eat less junk food, a new study has showed. Researchers at Northwestern University's Feinberg School Of Medicine found that focusing on avoiding the couch rather than on losing weight will help reduce a person's "saturated fat intake without even trying." Dr David Katz, director of the Yale Prevention Center, said that sitting on the couch for long periods of time creates 'the perfect storm' of unhealthy behavior. He said that while sitting on the couch, people are not getting enough exercise and seeing advertisements on TV for foods they really shouldn't be eating. He added that they are more inclined to eat while watching TV and able to eat mindlessly because they are distracted from their food by what they're watching on TV. (Daily Mail)

A: The average teen literature book contains how many occurrences of profanity?
A study published in the journal Mass Communication and Society examined 40 popular teen lit novels and found that the average book contains 38 occurrences of profanity. These occurrences were enough, according to researchers, to net a movie an R-rating, and also accounted for significantly more profanity than one would find in a T-rated video game. Furthermore, the characters who swear the most tend to be the attractive, rich and popular ones.

Sex Offenders Fighting Against Social Networking Bans
Sex offenders who've been banned from social networking websites are fighting the restriction in the courts, and many are winning the argument that the bans infringe on their free speech rights, the Associated Press reports. Courts have long allowed states to place restrictions on convicted sex offenders who've completed their sentences, such as on where they're allowed to live and work and requiring them to register with police. However, the social networking bans, which usually bar convicted sex offenders from joining social networks like Facebook or chat rooms or use instant-messaging programs bring new questions about free speech rights as the Internet becomes more and more central to how we communicate. Authorities say, however, that the bans are needed to protect children from pedophiles who look for victims online at sites frequented by children. The AP says federal judges in Nebraska and Louisiana have thrown out all or part of social media bans on sex offenders.
Should Rich Kids Get Scholarships? Controversy Over Free Ride for P. Diddy's Son
Controversy has arisen over the news that Justin Combs, son of hip-hop mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, has won a full $54,000 football scholarship to UCLA, with some questioning whether "free ride" scholarships should be given to the children of rich parents and if those kids should accept them. UCLA defended giving the scholarship to Combs -- who also earned a 3.75 GPA -- saying, "Unlike need-based scholarships, athletic scholarships are awarded to students strictly on the basis of their athletic and academic ability -- not their financial need." UCLA also said athletic scholarships don't rely on state money, but are funded through UCLA Athletics ticket sales, corporate partnerships, media contracts and donations from supporters.

KFLAG COUNTRY MUSIC UPDATE
Of all the up-and-coming acts that Kenny Chesney
could have tapped to open his Brothers of the Sun
stadium tour this summer, Jake Owen
was at the top of his list. Kenny has invited Jake out on select dates in the past, and as Kenny tells us, no one has ever been as grateful:"Jake's been on the road with us a couple of times, but never . . . I don't think he's been on a full tour before, and he did a few shows here and there, and he was so thankful to be on the show. This is kind of a running joke between he and I. I mean, he thanked me like 10 times a day for having me out on the road with him like five years ago, and I finally told him, I said, 'Look' . . . It's almost like I got to the point where I was avoiding him because he would just thank me all the time. I said, 'Jake, I know you're appreciative. I love ya, but don't thank me anymore,' and then he would . . . Cause I just wanted him to be part of the group and part of the tour out there, and still to this day he goes, 'I'm not gonna thank you anymore, I'm not gonna thank you anymore,' but I'm glad he's out there. He's had a really good record this past year and he deserves it."
- The Brothers of the Sun tour kicks off on Saturday (June 2nd) in Tampa, Florida.
- The lineup will also include co-headliner Tim McGraw and opening act Grace Potter & The Nocturnals.
- Kenny will release his new album, Welcome To The Fishbowl, on June 19th.

has filed a lawsuit against his ex-wife and former manager. He claims thatElizabeth Travis
breached her contract with him when she shared private details about his life in an attempt to ruin his career. TMZ.com reports that Randy also alleges Elizabeth tried to get more money from him by inflating travel reimbursement requests.
Elizabeth filed her own lawsuit against Randy earlier this year claiming breach of contract for terminating her as his manager in 2011, a job she held with the singer for nearly 30 years.
Randy and Elizabeth divorced in 2010.
Randy is asking the court to block her from being able to take a cut of his future concert dates, while Elizabeth is seeking her full management fee.
There is no word yet on these suits head to court.
wrote most of the songs for his upcoming album, Punching Bag
, in his new cabin on the Turner family property located outside Nashville. The cabin is filled with momentos that Josh holds dear, including a guitar given to him by the late Buck Owens
He tells us: You know, the Buck guitar was something that really caught me by surprise because I didn't have a whole lot of hits when he gave me that. I think maybe 'Long Black Train' might have been my only hit at the time, and he just absolutely loved that song. I have a recording of a song that he had written called 'The Last Train To Heaven' that he sent me, and it was him -- just him -- singing and playing on a piano, and talking to me on the recording. Little things like that have really meant a lot to me."
- Punching Bag will be in stores on June 12th.
- The album's first single, "Time Is Love," is in the Top 14 and climbing on the country charts.
